Spanish for Adventure: Peru
October 14-20, 2018
Open to the public and all levels of Spanish learners
maximum of 10 participant spots available – 9 spots left
Enrollment closes December 31, 2017
For those struggling to make consistent progress in Spanish, wanting to make new friends with similar interests, or to have epic adventures in a breathtaking setting far from home- I have a very exciting experience to share with you!
Imagine weekly Spanish learning, a private group environment to get to know other Spanish learners with similar goals, all culminating in a week spent speaking Spanish and being immersed in Peruvian culture in the stunning city of Cusco. This one of a kind opportunity combines learning, friendship, and adventure for those who want it all! The experience begins upon registration and lasts until November 2018.
Up to 10 students will have the opportunity for this one of a kind hybrid learning and adventure model. I have over ten years of Spanish teaching experience and will tailor your Spanish learning to your specific background, goals, and learning style, while pinpointing areas for improvement and focusing on building conversational skills like pronunciation, listening, and confidence speaking. You will get weekly personalized one on one Spanish instruction and/or conversation sessions from registration through the end of October 2018 ($2000+ value). The earlier you sign up, the more opportunity there is for learning! Regardless of your level of prior Spanish knowledge, you will gain confidence and skills to speak with native speakers at the end of over a year of instruction with this program (even if you are starting from zero).
In addition to up to 16 months of Spanish instruction, you will bond with your peers and fellow adventurers prior to the group travel portion of this experience. A private facebook group for participants and monthly video chat meetups to get to know one another are among the group elements. By the time we land in Cusco, we will all know each other well!
The Spanish learning experience culminates in a capstone week of immersion in the Spanish language and Peruvian culture of Cusco. Engage your Spanish skills and encounter Peruvian culture firsthand during this active, adventure-filled week in the heart of the historic Cusco.
Stay in downtown Cusco and visit historic sites like La Catedral, Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, Iglesia la Merced and more. Acclimate to the altitude by people watching in Centro Histórico and meandering the architecturally unique streets and buildings.
Centro Histórico de Cusco
Stay in one of the top rated hostels in Cusco, where there are nightly activities to bond with other travelers. You will have your own bed and our group will all be staying together. The hostel breakfast spread includes cereal, porridges, bread and jams, avocado bread and a sweet cake. Coffee and tea (cinnamon and clove, chamomile, lemongrass, anise and coca tea) are always available, and coca tea is helpful for altitude adjustment.
Take a cooking class where we prepare traditional Peruvian dishes starting from shopping at the local market for fresh ingredients ending at the dinner table. This is a real personalized gastronomic immersion experience (as well as cultural experience). The cooking class occurs in a friendly, fun and dynamic environment where everyone can participate regardless of knowledge or previous cooking experiences. The menu includes Ceviche, native fruits, Lomo Saltado, Pisco Sour and Chilcano de Pisco, and can be modified if needed based on dietary restrictions of participants.
Enjoy an evening pisco sour (local alcoholic beverage) walking tour. The tour includes a pisco sour making lesson, and the opportunity to choose your favorite pisco flavor by trying a few drinks at a nearby bar. You’ll be able to sharpen your cocktail-mixing skills and become a pisco pro! We will also stroll by the Cusco Cathedral and La Compania church in the Plaza de Armas, walk through San Blas plaza and capture alluring city view while we admire the artistry and masonry of Incan walls, including the 12-angled stone.
Then take a full day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World- Machu Picchu! We will depart from the hostel early and head to the train station in Ollantaytambo, then undertake a train journey of two hours. We will arrive at the Aguas Calientes station then take a bus zigzagging up to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. The tour of Machu Picchu includes a guided tour of the Citadel (approximately 2 hours) visiting the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows and the cemeteries. There will be free time to roam, and then we will return to Aguas Calientes where we can enjoy the hot springs. The optional soak in the hot springs will help relax any soreness from climbing all over Machu Picchu before we take a train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and then a bus back to Cusco.
One of the other highlights of the trip (besides Machu Picchu) is our trek to Skylodge Adventure Suites. We will hike an intrepid trail with several ziplines to arrive at the capsule in the Sacred Valley in Cusco. We will spend one night in a completely transparent hanging bedroom, allowing you to appreciate the impressive view of the magic and mystical valley. Gourmet meals, wine, and other beverages will be served in the capsule. The Skylodge is composed of three capsules, each of which can hold up to 4 people, and are situated at the top of a 1200 foot mountain with a 300 degree view of the Sacred Valley.
Set aside some time for yourself to practice conversation with the locals and adventure in the beautiful South America.
Frequently on this trip, English will not be an option. Immersion is one of the best ways to learn, practice, and cultivate your Spanish knowledge.
Anyone that has been studying Spanish for any length of time and at any level is welcome to attend this trip, even if you have never studied with me. There’s no perfect moment where you unlock Spanish conversational skills- it all starts with a little bit of courage, some basic Spanish knowledge, and an opportunity to put those together.
Your Inner Adventurer will love to venture into the unknown with a small group- to experience unforgettable landscapes, make new friends, try new foods, and enjoy an abundance of fresh tropical fruits that are nothing like what you can get at the supermarket in the US. That inner adventurer will love zooming along a zipline over the Sacred Valley, wandering through the magical Machu Picchu, and drinking pisco sours.
Imagine an entire week dedicated to Spanish, adventure, nature, culture, delicious food and drinks, coming together with other adventurers and connecting through relaxing, sight seeing, and exploring Cusco. Encouraging one another to speak Spanish together and fill in the gaps of your own Spanish knowledge, forming a solid foundation of practical Spanish.
We will have numerous opportunities to observe, question, and pick up local slang, colloquialisms, dialect, and accents.
What does it mean to speak Spanish?
It means appreciating the beauty of the language, traditions, and culture of those who share their language with us.
When you are in tune with the Spanish language, able to initiate conversation with Spanish speakers, listen, interpret, and remember their responses, you unlock the joy and beauty of the language and culture.
