Feruary's Featured Spanish Student is Chester! Get to know some of the Spanish leaners like yourself who are learning Spanish with Hannah! In January, we featured Dannette. Below, Chester was kind enough to answer some questions about his Spanish learning journey and share advice for Spanish learners.
My name is Chester. I am a machinist for a company that makes steel forgings for all kinds of applications. My hobbies vary and are ever expanding. The ones that are consistent are working on cars, having fun with my ten year old son, golf, and travel. Traveling is what really inspired me to want to learn Spanish. I've always been curious to learn but recent travels to Mexico has been the biggest influence.
The easiest thing about learning Spanish for me is that I enjoy working on it everyday. Even if it's just 5-10 minutes. Even after 3 years of self teaching I still enjoy learning. The hardest thing for me is pronunciation or speaking. Even when my brain knows what to say my mouth doesn't.
YouTube is probably my favorite learning tool. I like that I can watch a learning video while I eat lunch or to relax before going to sleep. I do have a few apps as well. Duolingo, I have a streak of over 730 days going, and Memrise is another app I enjoy. There are so many people I follow on instagram, including speakbetterspanish. I have also started watching a Spanish learning show called "Extra" .
However, there is nothing that will replace speaking the language as you learn. There are so many times I feel like giving up because learning another language is hard and there is no end. Learning another language is a lifelong adventure, but the sooner you start actually speaking it the more fun it becomes.
That is why I have started one on ones with Hannah at Speak Better Spanish. I wish I had started one on ones sooner. It's the best advice I can give. An added bonus to them is that they are actually fun.
